Central Avenue Bilingual Preschool (CABP)

History and Mission:

Central Avenue Bilingual Preschool (CABP) was created as a member of the Alliance of Part-Day Preschools for Children and Families at Child Care Resources Inc., to address the need of the Hispanic/Latino families in the east Charlotte area. Many Hispanic/Latino children enter school with few or no quality preschool experiences in addition to the language barrier.  CABP serves primarily but not exclusively the growing population of Hispanic/Latino families of immigrants in the Central Avenue area who meet the following criteria:

  1. At risk children between the ages of 2.5 - 5.
  2. Low income families who are eligible for subsidized child care.
  3. Families whose primary language is not English.

Main Components of the Program:

  • Two classrooms with trained High/Scope teachers.
  • Parenting classes.
  • A violence prevention program for 4 and 5 year olds.
  • Bilingual Story Hour provided by the bilingual storyteller from the Public Library on a weekly basis.
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for parents.
  • Visits from a nurse from Community Health Services.
  • Preschool Arts Lab, for 4 and 5 years olds is a literacy-based curriculum for early arts Experiences.

Parent Component:

The Parent Education Program helps parents be better prepared to help their children achieve success in school and in life by learning about developmental stages, discipline, and parenting issues in general.  Parents also learn how the school system operates and are not afraid to participate in all school related activities.

The Parent Educator accomplishes this by focusing on parent's needs and problems and by assisting them in accessing services as well as organizing workshops and sessions to cover many aspects of child development.  She invites guest speakers or does research to address those topics requested by parents and those that we consider necessary.  She also in in charge of referrals and tracking family change.

Administrative Staff:

The summer camp program provides care from 7:00am to 6:00pm daily for school aged children. The summer camp operates for nine weeks durning summer break. The children participate in many activities including weekly swimming, bowling, and skating. The children also go on many weekly field trips. Summer camp offers a variety of teacher directed activities and games as well at time for free choice activities. The C.D.C. provides a morning and afternoon snack and the children bring a packed lunch daily.
